On October 18, 2014, the Champaign Police Department arrested Joseph Lee Harris, 31, of Champaign, after an arrest warrant for a parole violation was issued. Harris was arrested during a domestic incident involving a female who reported being threatened and battered by Harris. The female was able to flee from the home to a safe place.
Champaign Police responded to the residence and attempted to make contact with Harris, to no avail. Based on the information provided to police, a threat assessment was conducted and the department’s Negotiations and Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) teams and the Champaign County Metro SWAT team were deployed to the scene. During the event, which lasted approximately four hours, the specialized teams secured the perimeter and made contact with Harris.
At 6:53 a.m., Harris exited the residence and was arrested, without incident, for Domestic Battery. Harris was transported to the Champaign County Jail. At the time of the report, the female victim did not require medical attention.
