Police Investigate Robbery (Central Illinois Bank – 302 W. Springfield Avenue)

Champaign, IL. – Today at approximately 3:41 PM, Champaign Police Officers received a report of a bank robbery having just occurred at Central Illinois Bank, located at 302 W. Springfield Avenue.  Based on the information provided by witnesses, police located and arrested one suspect in connection with the robbery.

Witnesses reported that a man entered the bank, and demanded money.  The teller then handed the suspect an undisclosed amount of cash after the suspect threatened the employee and implied having a gun. At the time of the robbery, there was one customer and five employees inside the bank.  None reported any injuries.

The suspect, Maurion Atkins, 41, of Decatur, IL, was located in a vehicle while driving in the area of Neil Street and Windsor Road, at approximately 3:50 PM.  Police also recovered money which traced back to a financial institution.  Atkins was arrested for Aggravated Battery.

Champaign detectives are currently conducting an investigation and believe that this robbery may be related to the Prospect Bank robbery, which occurred earlier today.
