Mahomet Aquifer as Sole Source Aquifer

The intergovernmental coalition to promote the designation of the Mahomet Aquifer as a Sole Source Aquifer pursuant to the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act continues to gain momentum. Angela Adams from Public Works, Joe Hooker from the Legal Department, and Allen Wehrmann, representing Layne Hydro, the private water resource consultant that prepared the Coalition’s petition that seeks the Sole Source designation, have been traveling throughout Central Illinois to provide information to communities located over the aquifer about the benefits of a Sole Source Aquifer designation. Most recently, the DeWitt County Board and the City Councils for Clinton and Watseka approved resolutions to become new parties and share the costs of petitioning the U.S. EPA for the Sole Source designation. In addition, the Illinois American Water Company has agreed to join and pay the same share as the City of Champaign. Fifteen separate entities, including the Water Company and the University of Illinois, are now parties to this important effort to protect this irreplaceable resource that serves as the principle or sole source of water for hundreds of thousands of residents in Central Illinois.
