Drug Drop Off

Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Champaign Police Department’s front lobby offers a safe drop box service to properly dispose of your prescriptions or outdated over-the-counter medicines.

This service allows residents to take pain medications and other drugs that people might abuse out of the home and to properly dispose of them; as well as helps to protect our waterways by encouraging citizens not to flush unwanted pharmaceuticals. Flushing medicines or pouring them down the drain can contaminate our waters, as most medicines are not removed by wastewater treatment plants or septic systems. As well, animals and people may still have access to potentially harmful drugs if thrown in the trash. Champaign Police will take the collected drugs to be incinerated, which is a safe, environmentally-preferred disposal method.

Prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, liquid medication in leakproof containers and veterinary pharmaceuticals are all accepted. Personal information remaining on the containers will not be used and privacy is strictly maintained.

Illicit drugs, syringes, needles, thermometers and bloody or infectious waste are not accepted.

Drug Drop-Off services are also available at the Urbana and University of Illinois Police Departments, as well as Walgreens Pharmacy:
