Parking Changes Near Central High School

To facilitate planned construction along the north side of Central High School, Park Avenue between New Street and Lynn Street has recently been vacated.  Passenger vehicles are now encouraged to use New Street, along the west side of the school, to pick up and drop off students, while buses (school buses and MTD buses) are to use Lynn Street.

Because of the expected concentration of vehicles accessing the on-site parking from New Street and dropping off/picking up students, Unit 4 asked that parking be restricted on New Street by not allowing vehicles to park there between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. on school days.  In addition, to help with service vehicles accessing the loading dock at the southwest corner of the school, Unit 4 asked that No Parking to Corner signs be installed in the southernmost part of New Street, just north of University Avenue.

To accommodate the increase in bus traffic, Unit 4 requested that parking along the west side of Lynn Street, between Park Avenue and Church Street be restricted by not allowing vehicles to park there between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. on school days.  A similar restriction is currently enforced on Lynn Street, one block south, between University Avenue and Park Avenue.

Possible parking restrictions near the high school were outlined in the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) between the City of Champaign and Unit 4 School District, approved by City Council on October 2, 2018.  The changes outlined in this Traffic Control Order are very similar to those described in the IGA.
