Apartment Fire – 907 S Mattis Ave.

The Champaign Fire Department responded to a working fire at 907 S. Mattis Ave., Monday, November 19, 2018, at 10:15 a.m.  Fire crews quickly contained the fire to the kitchen of a second-floor apartment.

Firefighters responded to the working fire called in by an occupant of the apartment.  Once on the scene, crews found heavy smoke within the second-floor apartment.  Firefighters extended a single hose line and quickly contained the fire to the immediate area of the stove.

Two occupants of this twelve-unit apartment building have been displaced because of this fire.  There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported.  The cause of the fire is accidental and attributed to unattended cooking.

The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop.  Unattended cooking is a contributing factor in one-third of home fires related to cooking equipment.
