Arrest Made in Aug. 23, 2018, N. Hickory Street Homicide Investigation

This evening, at approximately 5:45 p.m., the Waterloo Police Department, with assistance from the United States Marshals Service, arrested 48-year-old Shoen Russell of Champaign in Waterloo, Iowa, on charges of First-Degree Murder. Russell was arrested without incident and charged in connection with the death of 48-year-old Darin Mitchell, also of Champaign.

On Aug. 23, at approximately 9:10 p.m., Champaign Police responded to the 700 Block of N. Hickory Street following reports of a shooting. Police learned the shooting took place near the American Legion building entrance after a verbal argument turned physical. Arriving officers discovered Mitchell suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Mitchell was transported to an area hospital and taken into surgery but would later succumb to his injuries.

Based on information learned during the subsequent investigation by the Champaign Police Department, a $5 million arrest warrant for First-Degree Murder was issued on August 24 for Russell’s arrest.
