Forestry Staff Observe Arbor Day 2018

On Friday, April 27, Public Works Forestry Staff observed Arbor Day by planting trees along University Avenue, in front of Central High School. Students from Central assisted in the planting of the three trees (an ‘Espresso’ Kentucky Coffeetree, an American Beech, and an American Yellowwood). The City of Champaign has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA for 33 years. The observance of Arbor Day is one of the requirements to maintain that designation.

Staff talked to the students about Arbor Day and proper planting depth. Staff also gave a brief presentation to the students of the City’s “Tree Collector” app using an iPad. This app is used by staff to track and update the City’s tree inventory.
