Legal Department Gathers Supplies for Donation to Annual Backpack Project

With December upon us, it is easy to get swept up in the hustle and bustle that comes with the holidays. Giving and receiving gifts typically plays a large role during the holiday season, but for some that may not be the case. Staff from the City’s Legal Department pulled together again this year and gathered enough items to donate eight full backpacks to the ninth annual Backpack Project giveaway through Daily Bread Soup Kitchen. Toiletries, hand warmers, gloves, hats, sweatshirts and much more were stuffed into backpacks and delivered to the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen on December 7.

In addition to providing hot meals to over 200 guests per day, Daily Bread holds their annual Backpack Project to ensure their guests are also remembered during the holidays. The program has historically given away 800 to 1,000 backpacks each year. While the Legal Department’s contribution doubled from last year, it still reflects only a fraction of the effort needed for this project’s success. Staff members are hopeful that their efforts, along with the efforts of other local organizations, will make the holiday season a little brighter for the citizens of our community.

The giveaway event will take place on December 15 at 10:00 a.m. in Daily Bread’s new home, located at 116 N. First Street in Champaign.
