Neighborhood Services Staff Assists to Organize Sawgrass Neighborhood Watch

Neighborhood Coordination Staff organized a Sawgrass neighborhood watch kick off meeting on Sunday September 10. Approximately 35 Sawgrass Home Owners Association (HOA) members met at Windsor Road Christian Church to discuss the formation of a new neighborhood watch group.  The neighbors are concerned about an increase in auto and home burglaries in the area, along with parking issues on Summer Sage Court.  The group is seeking to be recognized by the existing Home Owners Association at the Sawgrass HOA meeting on September 14.  They will operate as a public safety subcommittee of the existing group with a goal of proactively responding to public safety issues in the neighborhood.  Champaign Police Sgt. Yandell attended the meeting to share statistics and crime prevention strategies to assist the neighbors.  City Council Member Angie Brix was also in attendance to hear community concerns and reassure citizens.
