Ben LeRoy, Associate Planner in the Planned and Development Department, assisted in the Let’s Get Rolling C-U Earn-A-Bike Program for local middle and high school students. This program was led by a partnership of the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club, the Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign, and the Champaign Urbana Safe Routes to School Project. Students learned several bicycle-related skills over the course of the program, include bicycle assembly, maintenance, and safe on- and off-road riding. The class concluded with an 8.5 mile ride across the community, at the end of which students took possession of the bicycles they had helped build and learned to ride. Funding for these bicycles came from funds raised during C-U Bike Month events, including Bike to Work Day.
