Police Make an Arrest in Murder Investigation (500 Block of E. Eureka)

On June 2, 2017 at approximately 6:14 PM, Champaign Police Officers responded to the 500 Block of E. Eureka St., after receiving multiple reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, police located a 24-year-old male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.  The victim was transported to a local hospital, but died a short time later that same evening.

Champaign Police Detectives have continued investigation into this incident and developed information that led to the issuance of an arrest warrant.  On June 5, a warrant for First Degree Murder was issued for Marquis T. Burnett, a 21-year-old male from Champaign.  Bond on the warrant was set at $1,000,000.

On June 7, at approximately 5:23 PM, officers from the multi-jurisdictional Champaign County Street Crimes Task Force located Burnett in a vehicle near the 2100 block of N. Lincoln Ave. in Urbana. The vehicle was stopped and Burnett was taken into custody without incident.

Also arrested from the vehicle stop were 21-year-old Tywone D. Mitchell and 20-year-old Jamonhe D. Watkins, both from Champaign. Both Mitchell and Watkins were wanted on outstanding arrest warrants for weapon-related offenses which are unrelated to the homicide investigation.

Crime Stoppers will pay a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of any additional person(s) responsible for this crime.
