Residential Fire – 503 Swigart Street

The Champaign Fire Department responded to a working fire at 503 Swigart St., Friday, February 10, 2017, at 4:39 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, fire crews reported a fire in the garage.  Suppression and rescue efforts began immediately.

Twelve pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately 27 emergency response personnel responded from Champaign Fire and Arrow Ambulance.  Fire crews entered and found heavy fire in the garage with smoke and fire extending into the home.  During a search of the home, one victim was found, treated on scene and transported to Carle Hospital.  Crews had the fire out at 5:32 a.m.  There were no firefighter injuries reported.  The total damage estimate is $100,000 to the structure and $25,000 contents.  Investigators continue to work at the scene to determine the cause.  No working smoke alarms were found in the residence.

The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence and to have and practice a home escape plan.  Smoke alarms can provide early notification when seconds count.
