Champaign Fire Department Will Be Conducting Live Fire Training

The Champaign Fire Department will be conducting live fire training October 18, 19, and 20, 2016, at the Illinois Fire Service Institute, 11 Gerty Drive, Champaign. Fire crews will have the opportunity to train with both the new self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and Thermal Imaging Cameras (TIC) recently purchased by the Fire Department.

These new SCBA provide advanced features not found on the previous SCBA. The equipment provides advanced warning of low air and a reduced profile providing for better maneuverability for the wearer. These features along with many others increased overall safety for the firefighters of the department.

The new TIC provide better overall technology, including better image clarity improving white balance in high heat situations. This improved visibility can allow for quicker victim recognition. The TIC also weighs almost half its predecessor reducing the burden on the firefighters who carry it.

There will be two sessions daily at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to allow for all on-duty crews to rotate through the scenario.
