Police Arrest 5 Individuals in Connection with Shooting and Homicide Investigations

Investigative information following recent shooting incidents in Champaign led law enforcement officials to the 600 Block of W. Beardsley Ave. today, shortly before 11:00 AM.  As Police approached the residence, five individuals fled from the area, resulting in multiple foot pursuits in varying directions.  Police apprehended all five individuals, with officers locating several firearms in the flight path of multiple fleeing suspects.

Arrested today were:

  • 32-year-old Shannen Campbell of Champaign, wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant for Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, stemming from the May 15 homicide shooting in the 1000 Block of N. James St.
  •  35-year-old Juvon Mays of Champaign, wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, stemming from the March 30 shooting investigation at Mattis North Apartments
  •  30-year-old Tyron Griffin of Champaign, arrested for Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon
  •  32-year-old Dontrail Wright of Champaign, arrested for Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon
  • 19-year-old Shoen Russell of Champaign, arrested for Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Possession of a Controlled Substance

Champaign Police Detectives, along with the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force and the multi-jurisdictional Street Crimes Task Force made the arrests and are continuing investigations into these incidents.

It should be noted that when officers became engaged in foot pursuit with the armed subjects, nearby schools were notified to go on a lockdown for student and staff safety.  Franklin Middle School, Stratton Elementary School, Novak Academy, Columbia Center School, Champaign Early Childhood Center, and Judah Christian School were all advised of the lockdown, and at 11:25 AM were provided Police clearance to resume normal activity at the schools.
