2016 STAR Awards Ceremony

The Neighborhood Services Advisory Board and the Neighborhood Services Department, in collaboration with Busey Bank and WCIA Channel 3, hosted the seventh annual STAR Awards, which was held on April 21 at the Hilton Garden Inn. Approximately 225 people attended this year’s ceremony.  Immediately preceding the ceremony, a reception was held to provide an opportunity for those in attendance to meet elected officials and City staff. Nate Banks and Friends provided musical entertainment for the reception.

To kick-off the STAR awards ceremony, the Lincoln’s Challenge color guard presented the raising of the colors, and Nate Banks provided a musical rendition of the National Anthem. Mayor Feinen provided opening remarks to those in attendance. As part of the ceremony staff highlighted the upcoming community production of Dreamgirls, the Keep Champaign Beautiful initiative, and the 2016 Champaign-Urbana Regional Neighborhood Network Conference.  The 2016 STAR Awards ceremony was emceed by Anthony Antoine, Morning Show News Anchor at WCIA.  Twenty eight individuals, groups or organizations were nominated for recognition by members of the general public.

The following individuals were recognized as Distinguished Honorees:

  • Community Partner- Champaign County Community Coalition
  • Good Neighbor- Joe Muskin
  • Neighborhood-Community Building- Brad Morris
  • Neighborhood Leadership- Randy Bishop
  • Neighborhood Of The Year- Garden Hills
  • Rising Star – Ebony Shackleford
