Apartment Fire – 1513 W Kirby Ave

The Champaign Fire Department responded to a working fire at 1513 W. Kirby Avenue on March 24, 2016, at 10:39 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, fire crews reported smoke coming from the south end of the structure. Building evacuation and suppression efforts began immediately.

Fourteen (14) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately thirty-four (34) emergency response personnel responded to the call from Champaign Fire and Pro Ambulance. Lieutenant Cullen Jones was the commanding officer of this incident. The fire was brought under control at 11:30 a.m. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported. The Champaign Police Department provided traffic control. Total damage is estimated at $65,000 structure and $7,000 contents. The origin of the fire was in apartment #6. The cause was accidental; a contractor had been making plumbing repairs.
