Champaign Police Investigate Multiple Shooting Incidents

Last night, at approximately 8:57 PM, Champaign Police were dispatched to the 1200 Block of N. Hickory St. for a shooting report.  Upon arrival, officers found that a 22-year-old Champaign man had been shot. The victim was transferred to the hospital, where he was believed to have suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries.

In an incident believed to be related, today, at 9:45 AM, Police received a report of shots fired near Prospect Ave. and Dennison Dr. in Champaign. Reports indicate that a white SUV shot at another vehicle traveling on Prospect.  A 33-year-old male who Police believe was targeted by the suspect, was struck by the gunfire.  Police were able to provide life-saving first aid to the victim, who was transported to the hospital for serious injuries.

At 11:31 AM, Police received multiple reports of additional gunfire in the 400 Block of W. Vine St.  Preliminary reports indicate that two people (one on foot, the other person from within a vehicle) exchanged gunfire with an individual who was on the opposite side of the street.  The suspects exchanged multiple rounds of gunfire before fleeing the scene.  No victims have been reported in this incident, though initial investigation reveals property damage to two nearby vehicles.  Eyewitnesses describe the following suspect information:

  • Suspect 1:  Black male, approximately 18 years old, wearing dark clothing, seen leaving the scene after getting into a grey passenger vehicle (possibly a Nissan)
  • Suspect 2:  Black male, approximately 18 years old, wearing dark clothing
  • Suspect 3:  an unidentified person firing from a blue passenger vehicle (similar to a BMW)

At this time, Police are uncertain if this third incident is connected to the previous two events.

Champaign Police are increasing police presence in these areas as well as diligently processing all three scenes.  Citizens are urged to contact Champaign Police at 217-351-4545 with any information that could be related to these incidents.  Anonymous tips can also be sent to Crime Stoppers by calling 217-373-8477; texting “CCTIP” plus the information to 274637 (CRIMES); or online at www.373tips.com.
