School Bus Incident at Duncan Rd. and Springfield Ave.

This morning, at approximately 7:15 AM, Champaign Police responded to the intersection of Duncan Rd. and Springfield Ave., after receiving a report that a high school student was on a school bus showing-off a weapon.  Students were directed to exit the bus and Police were able to seize an unloaded BB gun.  As a result, the student was arrested for disorderly conduct.

Initial investigation revealed that the arresting student brandished the butt of the weapon and made claims that it was a hand grenade, which prompted the call to authorities.  Police worked with Unit 4 administrators to identify and locate the bus that was directed to pull over and safely exit students.  The student suspected of having the weapon attempted to run from the scene; however, Police were able to apprehend the student, as well as the BB gun.

Unit 4 Administrators are directly contacting parents/guardians of those students on the bus and will send additional communications to families of students at the nearby Unit 4 schools.  Champaign Police continue to investigate this incident.
