Champaign Police Arrest Subjects with Stolen Firearms

On Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at approximately 7:38 P.M., the Champaign Police Department executed a search warrant in the 100 block of Kenwood Road, Champaign, IL. The search warrant was part of an on-going residential burglary investigation involving stolen electronics and firearms.

In October of 2014, a burglary occurred at a private residence in Champaign, during which several electronic items and firearms were stolen. Champaign Police Department detectives actively investigated this incident, which led to the issuance of a search warrant on January 14, 2015.

The Champaign Police Department SWAT Team was utilized to enter and secure the apartment without incident. As a result, Demetrious D. Gibbs, 24 of Champaign and Jeremiah T. Moore, 18 of Champaign were arrested.

Demetrious Gibbs was charged in Champaign County court with the offense of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon. Jeremiah Moore was charged in Champaign County court for violations of the Firearm Owners Identification Card Act. Although arrests have been made, this case remains under investigation.

In 2014, the Champaign Police Department seized and/or collected approximately 150 firearms, some of which were used during the commission of criminal acts. The Champaign Police Department recognizes that illegal weapon possession and gun violence pose a significant risk to members of the community, and the Champaign Police Department will continue efforts to bring individuals that commit these crimes to justice.
