Entry-Level Firefighter Recruitment

The Human Resources and Fire Departments administer programs to recruit and select a diverse group of qualified candidates for entry-level Firefighter positions.  Recruitment efforts for 2014 successfully yielded an increase of 15 applications from 2012.

The Human Resources and Fire Departments hosted an optional study session for the written exam on September 17.  The study session included a practice exam and the opportunity for applicants to ask questions and receive information on the test format and content.  The written exam, preceded by an orientation presented by City staff, was held on September 27; 91 candidates sat for the exam.

Those candidates who successfully pass the written exam will be invited to an oral interview with a panel approved by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners.  Scores from the written exam and oral interviews will be combined to establish an initial rank-order eligibility list.  Candidates will then be able to apply for preference points for military service, experience/fire certification, education, and/or residency.  A final eligibility list will then be reviewed for approval by the Board of Police and Fire Commissioners in February 2015.  Firefighters may be selected from this list as vacancies occur during the next two years.
