News Release – City of Champaign Addressing Snowfall

CITY OF CHAMPAIGN CONTINUES TO ADDRESS SNOWFALL

Champaign — The City of Champaign Public Works Department continues its response to the snowfall that began falling yesterday afternoon. The City’s weather service indicates we have received close to eight inches of snow throughout this storm. City crews are are following the plans set forth in the City’s Snow and Ice Control Plan. Public Works crews continue to address primary routes and will have 12 hours to clear those once the snow stops falling, before moving into secondary streets. A third crew reported to work this morning and will work until 11:30 p.m. tonight. Two additional, consecutive 12-hour crews will report after this crew, with the intention to have addressed all primary and secondary streets, dead ends, and cul-de-sacs by 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Citizens are encouraged to take appropriate precautions when driving: leave early, allow extra time to reach your destination, stay off the streets whenever possible, and be cautious around snowplows. Since there was more than two inches of snow, the Public Works Director may choose to activate the Sidewalk Snow Ordinance and Emergency Snow Routes once City crews have completed the primary routes. In the event of activation, this information will be distributed via the City’s website and other local and social media. To view areas affected by this ordinance, please visit the City’s website. Citizens are reminded not to place snow cleared from their property into City streets.

Public Works staff will continue to proactively monitor forecasts and to respond in a timely and efficient manner to threats of inclement weather. Citizens are encouraged to monitor the City’s website (www.ci.champaign.il.us/snow ), CGTV Cable Channel 5, and local media for information about street clearing activities. Whenever possible, Citizens are encouraged to keep City streets free of parked vehicles during this time to expedite plowing efforts and to utilize alternate off-street locations (such as the Hill Street Parking Deck in Downtown) in lieu of parking on the street.
