Champaign Fire Department responded to an early morning apartment fire with one person left dead in the apartment early this morning at a two story apartment complex on the corner of State and Healey Streets. Fire and Police are still on the scene investigating the cause of the fire.
Firefighters located one victim in the fire apartment. However, the resident was not in the apartment. Champaign Police Department and the K-9 Unit from the Office of the State Fire Marshal are assisting with this investigation.
There is heavy fire and smoke damage in the apartment where the fire occurred and water damage in the apartment below. Residents to all but two apartments were able to return to their homes within an hour of firefighters extinguishing the fire.
