Neighborhood Open House for John Street Restriping

An open house was held Monday, February 4, 2013 at the Champaign Church of Christ, 1509 W. John Street, to share information on the upcoming restriping of John Street, from Kenwood Road to Prospect Avenue. Staff from Public Works, Planning and the project consultant Foth Engineers, were present to answer questions. Each household in the project area received a postcard notifying them of the project, the project website and the open house. The restriping will be completed during the 2013 construction season and should take about one week to complete.

On John Street, from west to east, the restriping begins at Kenwood Road. From Kenwood Road to Russell Street, parking will remain on the south side of the street and bicycle lanes will be added. The parking lane will be removed from the north side of the street. From Russell Street to Willis Street, bicycle share the road arrows or ‘sharrows’ will be added. This will continue the ‘sharrows’ that are currently in place from Willis to Prospect Avenue.

Retaining the parking lane on the south side of the street has two benefits. First, it allows for highly-utilized parking adjacent to Centennial Park to remain. The Park District reports parking in this location is needed for seasonal employees and for guests attending sporting events. Second, it allows for Westview School to retain their pickup and drop-off lane on the south side of John, between Garfield Avenue and Russell Street.
