Champaign police detectives are investigating a shooting incident that occurred on January 11, 2013, at the Super 8 Motel located at 202 W. Marketview Drive, at 3:01 AM.
Officers responded to Carle Hospital for a report of a shooting. After interviewing both the victim and suspect, police received preliminary information to indicate that 20 year-old Antonio Brown of Champaign, accidentally shot his 20 year-old girlfriend, Sydni Kay Blackwell of Williamsport, Indiana.
The incident occurred when Brown improperly handled the gun, causing it to accidentally discharge a round and wound Blackwell. Blackwell was transported to the hospital, by Brown, for treatment of gunshot wounds. This afternoon, at 12:45 PM, Blackwell died at Carle Hospital in Urbana, Illinois.
Today, Champaign police officers recovered the gun used in the shooting and arrested Antonio Brown for Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon and Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm. He was transported to the Champaign County Jail.
