Officer Involved Shooting: Armed Subject Shot During Domestic Call

The Champaign Police Department is currently investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred this morning in the 1200 block of Crispus Drive.

A preliminary investigation reveals the following:

Officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of Crispus Drive, 4:42 AM, for a domestic disturbance. Officers were informed that a male subject had forced his way into the home and was armed with a gun. Upon arrival at the residence, the officers engaged the male subject and shots were fired. The male subject was injured. Officers rendered first aid while summoning medical assistance. The male was transported to Carle Hospital Emergency Room for treatment of injuries. His condition is unknown at this time. No other injuries were reported.

The Champaign Police Department requested investigative assistance from the Champaign County Multi-jurisdictional Investigative Team, which consists of staff from the following agencies: University of Illinois Police, Urbana Police, Rantoul Police, Mahomet Police, Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office, Illinois State Police, and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office. The Illinois State Police is the lead agency for this investigation.

The Department asks for the public’s patience as a thorough review of this incident is conducted. “Any incident, in which a use of force of this magnitude is required, is life changing for both the officer and the injured party,” says Anthony Cobb, Chief of Police. “Our Prayers go out to him and his family as well as both officers involved,” he added.
