The Brick Surface Rehabilitation Project is made up of two separate projects. The first involves the repair of nearly 50 locations throughout downtown where sidewalk pavers have either settled or heaved, causing trip hazards and eyesores. Each repair involves removing the existing bricks, reconstructing the underlying base, and re-laying the bricks.
The second part of the project involves removing the existing pavement along the north side of the City Building and replacing it with a concrete sidewalk and brick paver carriage walk matching the pattern that borders the other three sides of the building. This part of the project will also include the construction of new planter boxes with decorative fencing; a new crosswalk, a sculpture pad, and an integral snow melt system. The snow melt system will heat the sidewalk as necessary to keep snow and ice from accumulating on the concrete. This innovative system will save manpower and eliminate the need to place melting salts in that area.
The contractor, A&R Services, began work on Wednesday, September 5. Their intent is to have one crew working on the isolated brick paver repairs, while another begins working on the City Building portion of the work. Work around the City Building will initially focus on removal of the existing concrete where the new planter boxes will be constructed.
Initially, there will be little to no disruption in pedestrian traffic around the building. However, as the project progresses, foot traffic will be re-routed to ensure a safe environment. Pedestrians in the area are urged to be aware of their surroundings during construction and to watch for updates that might impact their travel.
This project is expected to be completed by December 14, 2012.
