Running Enthusiast John “the Penguin” Bingham to Speak in Champaign

John “the Penguin” Bingham, author of several books and the popular “Runner’s World” column “No Need for Speed,” will inspire would-be runners and marathoners alike at a talk hosted by the Champaign Public Library on Thursday, March 25, at 7 pm. The event is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow Bingham’s presentation. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

With titles such as “The Courage to Start: A Guide to Running for Your Life,” Bingham’s books urge runners to set reasonable goals and focus on fun and fitness rather than winning. He tells the story of his own middle-aged transformation from couch potato to marathoner, calling himself and runners like him “penguins” — slow but enthusiastic. Bingham has now completed 40 marathons and hundreds of 5K and 10K races. He closes each magazine column with an encouraging “Waddle on, friends!”

Bingham also wrote the bestseller “No Need for Speed: A Beginner’s Guide to the Joy of Running” and co-wrote two books with Jenny Hadfield: “Training for Mortals: A Runner’s Logbook and Source of Inspiration” and “Running for Mortals: A Commonsense Plan for Changing Your Life Through Running.” His monthly column now appears in “Competitor Magazine.”

The library is located at 200 W. Green St. For additional information, call 217/403-2070 or visit the library’s website at www.champaign.org.
