Larry and Alaina Kanfer to Discuss New Book, “Barns of Illinois”
Photographic artist Larry Kanfer collaborated with his wife, Alaina, to capture the humble beauty of barns and relate the personal stories behind them in their book, “Barns of Illinois.” The Kanfers will be at the Champaign Public Library, 200 W. Green St., for a presentation and book signing on Thursday, March 11, at 7 pm. Copies of the book, published last fall by University of Illinois Press, will be for sale at this free public event.
The Kanfers will share what they learned about the barns, including some in Champaign County, and the people who preserve them. The book features more than 100 photos by Larry, a renowned photographer of the Midwest landscape. Alaina provided the text, looking beyond the architecture to the layers of history, tradition, and emotional attachment that make each barn unique. Previous books by Larry Kanfer include “On Firm Ground,” “Prairiescapes,” and “On Second Glance: Midwest Photographs.”
The event is part of the library’s “Ethnic Illinois” program series, which continues on April 22 with an overview of Illinois Native American history presented by Meg Bero, executive director of the Schingoethe Center for Native American Studies at Aurora University.
